Kampay!

I may have been too busy drinking gulping SanMig Light the past years that I failed to notice one good alak manufactured right here in Sunshine City Laoag.

Discovered it lately through a blog entry detailing  a tambay at tagay night held by YTRIP (a youth-led NGO that promotes sustainable local tourism and responsible travel) in the last quarter of 2008.  The group got several bottles of wine from parts of Luzon and tried, tasted, and drank the night away.

Their exhibits included:

Bugnay (Ilocos)
Basi (Ilocos)
Duhat (Ilocos)
Pineapple (??)
Camote with Pineapple (Banaue)
Tapuey (light) (Banaue)
Tapuey (toasted) (Banaue)
Lambanog (Quezon)
Strawberry (Benguet)
Grape (Benguet)

While they concluded that…

The night’s biggest favorites (the winners!!) were the Tapuey (light), Tapuey (toasted), and the Lambanog. And that the losers being the Strawberry and Grape wines.

duhat-wine4.., the Duhat Wine, according to three tasters, is “the closest to how wine would/should taste like”.

I agree.  Suabe ang guhit sa lalamunan. Sarap ng tama. It’s a bonus that it also offers all the health benefits that red wine promises, i.e. good for the heart, antioxidant, anti-cancer properties.  Yes, it is as good for the body as it is for the spirit.

The delight that is the Duhat Wine is actually a product of careful research and product development conducted by Cormel Foods with the support of the Department of Science and Technology and the Mariano Marcos State University (where I teach).

At  just 150Php a bottle, oh my, das leben ist gut!

Actually this is my first time to encounter pineapple, camote w/ pineapple, duhat and tapuey wine, i’m only familiar w/ basi, bugnay, lambanog and the most common grapes and strawberry  wine. This products only prove that Filipinos are productive and creative, aside from the fact that we are fun of drinking wines and other liqours. Alcohol is not bad because it is needed by our body and sometimes it can help most specially  if we have problems that we cant express or share when we are in normal thinking( free alcohol). We become natural when we are drunk, our true self will come out without inhibitions and hesitation and we feel very free in expressing our true feelings. But to much of it can cause addiction that will lead to death.

i suddenly remembered that we made wine when i was in high school. although it really is expensive making it out from an apple. no wonder, i’ve never heard of apple wine before. others made it out from other fruits like orange and mango. though we haven’t really tasted it. we just tested the alcohol content. it’s really good to hear that there are wine produced here in Ilocos. if i could only go and buy. not to drink it but as a souvenir. i still think that at my age, i must not drink something that have an alcohol content. my mother would be hysterical…i wonder if she’d throw me out our house if i got home drunk…

Yeah, it is actually a cultural thing. University cafeterias in Germany are said to serve beer. The key is in moderation.

  4. it is my first time to hear that kind of DUHAT wine, it brings me some interest to taste that wine. because i’d experience already drinking wine, that is the Strawberry wine that my friend gave me when she came home from baguio. but that duhat wine, its name is not good for the ears of the buyers.
